Sam Bennett recently shares his thoughts after being named as a replacement on Team Canada’s Olympic roster. He expressed his gratitude and excitement about representing Canada in its pursuit of gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Bennett was chosen to replace Tampa Bay Lightning center Anthony Cirelli, who is sidelined with an injury. Cirelli suffered the injury during the Lightning’s outdoor game against the Boston Bruins last Sunday. The timing of Cirelli’s injury was unfortunate, but it created a window for Bennett to step in and make his mark on Team Canada.
Bennet brings a wealth of experience in high-pressure situations. He has been a key contributor for the Florida Panthers over the past few season. His physical style of play was crucial in their back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.
As a result, he was also named the Conn Smythe winner as the most valuable player of last year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. Bennett also represented Canada at last year’s 4 Nations tournament.
Bennett’s inclusion on the Olympic roster adds depth and versatility. He will join a talented roster that includes Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and Connor McDavid. In addition, he will also join his Panthers teammates Sam Reinhart and Brad Marchand, who are on the roster.
For Bennett, the chance to represent Canada on the world’s biggest stage carries special meaning. He spoke about the honor and noted how much it meant to him after dreaming about it for years.
Sam Bennett Reacts to Call-Up to Team Canada Olympic Roster
Sam Bennett’s call-up to Team Canada was not a given. Hockey Canada considered him as one of several players who could be called-up if an injury occurred.
After Cirelli was ruled out, Hockey Canada decided to add Bennett to the roster. The decision reflected management’s confidence in Bennett’s ability to play in a checking role. His versatility provides Team Canada with a balanced approach, which includes both skill and toughness.
“It’s pretty incredible. I mean, it’s every kid’s dream to get to represent your country in the Olympics,” Bennett told CBC Sports. “I have so many great memories of watching the Olympics with my family, so yeah, to be here and to be preparing for that, it’s a pretty cool experience.”
Bennett said the Olympic stage will be greater than previous international tournaments.
“It’s gonna be even a bigger stage than the 4 Nations, and we know how many people are going to be watching, especially in Canada,” Bennett said. “It’s going to be a big moment.”
Bennett Reveals What He’s Most Excited About in Milan
Bennett also spoke about what he looks forward to most at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.
Like many athletes, Bennett plans to full embrace the Olympic experience while representing his country. Athletes often take time to explore the host city, interact with fellow athletes representing their nation, and support them by attending their events.
Speaking with CBC Sports, Bennett said he is eager to return to Italy and enjoy the culture.
“I’ve been to Italy once, and I loved it there,” Bennett said. “So, [I’m] excited to go back and eat all the amazing food they have there and just experience the culture of that country.”
