On the heels of an entertaining 2025 Wimbledon final, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have reunited leading up to the Cincinnati Open.
After skipping out on the National Bank Open in Toronto, both players will be making their highly anticipated returns at the Masters 1000 tournament, with Sinner looking to defend his 2024 title and Alcaraz looking to win the event for the first time.
The two were seen together in a video shared by the Cincinnati Open’s social media pages, laughing and joking about their time off following the Jul. 13 final.
Once qualifiers wrap up, the Round of 128 will begin on Aug. 7; however, Alcaraz and Sinner will both automatically advance to the Round of 64, which is expected to start on Saturday, Aug. 9.
While Sinner is heading into the event looking to defend his title, Alcaraz will be looking to bounce back from a stunning upset to Gael Monfils during his opening match of last year’s tournament.
Carlos Alcaraz Opens up on Competitive Rivalry With Jannik Sinner
The competitive rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz seems poised to define the future of men’s tennis for years to come.
Much like all-time greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the two have a good relationship off the court that’s blossomed in part due to their fierce on-court battles.
Leading up to both Cincinnati and the US Open, where Alcaraz will look to dethrone Sinner as reigning champion, the world No. 2 spoke with Financial Times about their rivalry, and the friendship that’s come from it:
“Jannik and I, who have had great battles on the court, see each other a lot off of it. We talk, we train together sometimes. And in the end you forge a good relationship, a beautiful relationship.
“We want to win and beat each other, but then off court, being good people and getting along is another matter. For me, that is one of the virtues and values of sport.”
Darren Cahill Set To Coach Sinner in Cincinnati Despite Conflicting Reports
Following Jannik Sinner’s win over Carlos Alcaraz at SW19, a rumor emerged suggesting that Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill, wouldn’t be accompanying the world No. 1 to Cincinnati or the US Open.
The news caught many fans by surprise, however, Brad Gilbert then poured cold water on the rumor late last month. In a pair of posts on Twitter, Gilbert emphatically denied the rumor regarding Cahill:
Additionally, Sinner also notably rehired fitness coach Umberto Ferrara, who was at the heart of the world No. 1’s recent doping scandal, heading into Cincy.
While it was physio Giacomo Naldi who accidentally transmitted Clostebol to Sinner, Ferrara provided him with the spray, placing a portion of the blame on his shoulders.
With Cahill and Ferrara back in his player box, Sinner now heads into a pivotal stretch of the season where he must defend 3,000 points between Cincinnati and the US Open.
As Alcaraz looks to win his first title in Cincinnati, and his second at the US Open, we could potentially see him overtake Sinner in the ATP rankings depending on how things shake out over the coming weeks.
