A fire in a trailer park home in Sherrard, Illinois, killed four children and one adult woman, reports WRMJ. Initial reports said that three children and two adults had been killed, but emergency responders mistakenly identified a 15-year-old corpse as an adult.
Foul play is not suspected but the exact cause is still unknown. Sherrard is south of Quad Cities, Illinois, about 180 miles west of Chicago.
The fire broke out at about 1 a.m. local time on March 27, according to The Quad City Times.
One adult and two children managed to escape the inferno. The adult is believed to be the father of the family. He attempted to re-enter the mobile home to rescue the others but was unsuccessful. He was injured and is being treated in a local hospital.
WQAD reported that the local fire department were still present at the trailer park on Wednesday afternoon and that fire had completely destroyed the home. A local church that the family attended is planning a vigil for the family and the American Red Cross are attending to the surviving members of the family.
