Marcelo Vieira, better known as Marcelo, is considered not only the best defensive back on Brazil’s 2014 World Cup squad, but in the entire world. Watch the video above to see some of his best highlights.

1. He Scored a Goal On His Own Team in the World Cup Opener
Marcelo is considered one of the best full-backs in the game, but he made a huge mistake in the opening game against Croatia in this year’s World Cup when he accidentally netted a goal on his own team to put Croatia in the lead 1-0 over Brazil after 11 minutes of play. Luckily, Brazil ended up winning 3-1 anyway in the group match. Marcelo’s mistake was the first own goal of the 2014 World Cup.
2. An Injury Kept Him Out of World Cup Friendlies
In November of 2013, Marcelo was kept from playing in games prior to the World Cup due to a knee injury, questioning his ability to stay on the 23 man roster at first. He ended up sitting out for just two weeks and missed international games against Honduras and Chile along with two games for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid’s website announced at the time of the injury:
Following examinations and scans carried out today (Friday) on our player Marcelo at Sanitas-La Moraleja hospital, he has been diagnosed with traumatic arthritis in the left knee.”
3. He Has Been Playing For Real Madrid Since 2007
Marcelo had many ups and downs over the course of his career at Real Madrid.
When he joined Real Madrid in 2007, the President of the club, Ramón Calderón said:
He is an important signing for us. He is a young player who will inject some freshness into the side and is part of our plan to bring younger players into the squad. We’re very happy because he’s a pearl that half of Europe wanted.”
From 2007-2009, Marcelo performed poorly for the club, but eventually stepped up his game by 2010 and has had much success. Since then, the best soccer players to ever play the game including Paolo Maldini, Diego Maradona and Roberto Carlos.
4. He Married His Longtime Girlfriend When He Was 20
Marcelo fell in love with Clarice Alves at the age of 15 after his brother introduced the two. After dating her for a quarter of his life, they tied the knot in 2008 and they had their first child, Enzo Gattuso Alves Vieira, in 2009.
Whenever the Brazilian soccer star makes a brilliant play, you can find him looking up into the crowd and making a heart with his hands to show that he dedicated it to his beloved son and wife.
