Donald Trump’s family has been thrust into the political spotlight. The family has been scrutinized by the media for years, but now they could become the first family.
Trump is often photographed with his five children, and his wife, Melania. Trump, 70, has two prior marriages, which have also been brought back into the public eye–his first to Ivana in 1977, and then Marla Maples in 1993.
Here’s what you need to know about Ivana Trump:
1. Ivana Was Married to Trump for 14 Years
The Czechoslovakian-born former model met Donald Trump in New York. On April 7, 1977 the two married, when Ivana was 28. The couple quickly became prominent figures in New York society in the 1980s.
During their marriage, Trump had an affair with Marla Maples, which splashed tabloid headlines. Ivana filed for divorce in 1991.
Ivana settled her divorce from Donald for a reported $14 million cash settlement, an apartment at Trump Plaza, the family’s 45-room Connecticut estate, and access to Mar-a-Lago, the family home in Palm Beach, Florida, that also serves as a private club for the Palm Beach elite, according to Vanity Fair.
Ivana was later sued by Trump for violating a gag order from their divorce. However, now she says her and her ex-husband are on good terms.
Ivana told the Post that she even advises her ex-husband at times. “I suggest a few things,” she told the paper. “We speak before and after the appearances and he asks me what I thought.” According to the Post, Ivana tells her husband to “be more calm,” although she says “Donald cannot be calm.”
“He’s very outspoken. He just says it as it is … He’s no politician. He’s a businessman. He knows how to talk. He can give an hour speech without notes.”
In the article, Ivana says she agrees with Trump’s immigration policies. “And I’m an immigrant,” Ivana stated.
She also spoke to the Post about the possibility of Trump’s wife Melania, becoming First Lady.
“She’s going to adapt just fine,” she said to the Post. “She never did anything wrong to me. I wish them all the best.”
Following her divorce from Trump, Ivana has also had two other marriages. She wed Riccardo Mazzucchelli in 1995, but their marriage ended two years later. Then in 2008, she married Rossano Rubicondi– the two separated shortly after.
She now has three boyfriends and has no intention to re-marry, according to the Post:
If you are a married woman, you usually follow what the man wants to do. I can do whatever what I want. I’m not getting married again. But I like companions. The most important for me is honesty, good humor — not necessarily a millionaire. I don’t need [money]. I prefer to be a baby sitter than a nursemaid. I don’t want to worry about bad knees and bad back.
2. She Became Vice President of Interior Design for the Trump Organization
During their marriage, Ivana was involved in several of Trump’s real estate projects, including the renovation of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, as well as the the construction of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, and the landmark Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
In an interview this April with U.S. Weekly, she recounted her initial responsibilities within the Trump Organization:
He gave me the chance. I came [to America] and I was a poor person. I had a sense of style so he put me in charge of interior design of the Grand Hyatt Hotel. I was seven months pregnant and going up the steps, making sure everything was on the schedule.
Ivana took a major role in the Trump Organization. She became the Vice President of Interior Design for the company, leading the signature design of Trump Tower.
Later, she served as president of the Atlantic City Castle casino resort and the Plaza hotel. Ivana became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1988.
3. Ivana & Trump Had 3 Children Together
While married, they had three children: Donald John Jr., Ivanka Marie, and Eric Fredrick. Ivana has eight grandchildren. Following their divorce, Ivana told the Post, they were able to remain amicable and co-parent their children.
Trump’s oldest daughter, Ivanka, 34, serves as an executive vice president of the Trump Organization where she manages the company’s international hotels and golf courses. The wife, and mother of three also has her own personal Ivanka Trump brand. A former model, she is married to real estate developer Jared Kushner.
Eric is set to speak to the RNC Wednesday night and Ivanka will introduce her father Thursday when he is expected to accept the nomination of the Republican Party.
4. She Has a Net Worth Estimated at $60 Million
After Ivana and Trump’s much-publicized divorce, which won her a lucrative divorce settlement, she established two of her own companies, Ivana, Inc. and Ivana Haute Couture.
She has a net worth estimated at $60 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Ivana has written three novels: Love Alone Lucy Wilkins, Free to Love , and The Best Is Yet to Come: Coping With Divorce and Enjoying Life Again.
Ivana has also dabbled in some film work, she was the subject of her own Lifetime network biography special, Intimate Portrait: Ivana Trump (2001) as well as the host of her own reality television special, Ivana Young Man on the Oxygen Channel.
5. She Recently Disputed a Report That She Had Accused Trump of Rape in the 1990s
Ivana disputed a story published by The Daily Beast that reported that she had accused Trump of rape in a court deposition from the 1990s. The scene is written in graphic detail in Harry Hurt III’s book Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, according to The Daily Beast.
The book depicts the rape claim, which stems from an accusation Ivana made during divorce proceedings, that Trump assaulted her after he used her plastic surgeon for a scalp-reduction surgery to remove a bald spot. “Your f – – king doctor has ruined me!” Trump yelled at Ivana, according to the book.
The Lost Tycoon details Trump pulling out fistfuls of hair from her scalp, before forcing himself on her sexually.
After the 1993 book was published, Ivana clarified her remarks in a statement, according to the Post:
“As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness, which he normally exhibited toward me, was absent. I referred to this as a ‘rape,’ but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.”
When the story re-surfaced in July, she defended her ex-husband.
In a statement to CNN, Ivana said:
I have recently read some comments attributed to me from nearly 30 years ago at a time of very high tension during my divorce from Donald. The story is totally without merit. Donald and I are the best of friends and together have raised three children that we love and are very proud of. I have nothing but fondness for Donald and wish him the best of luck on his campaign. Incidentally, I think he would make an incredible president.
