It seemed like only a matter of time before Ty Montgomery was going to get a chance to prove himself in the Green Bay Packers offense. But no one thought it would happen this quickly.

Alas, his opportunity comes at a somber time for the Pack. According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Jordy Nelson, who injured his knee Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, is believed to have a torn ACL:

The worst was later confirmed by the Packers:

Randall Cobb and Davante Adams will pick up most of the slack, but this is an offense that has room for three productive receivers. It’s why Adams, the previously projected No. 3, was being drafted in the eighth round in 12-team leagues. There’s tons of value to be had when Aaron Rodgers is throwing the ball.

The main candidates to step into the No. 3 role are Montgomery and Jeff Janis, and both deserve to be drafted as lottery tickets in the later rounds.

Montgomery may be slightly behind Janis at this point, but he’s compelling nonetheless. The third-round draft pick out of Stanford has impressed during training camp. He’s an explosive athlete who should make an impact on special teams as is, and if he continues to improve, Green Bay will find ways to get him the ball.

Although the rookie is likely to be inconsistent, he needs to be owned simply for his upside. Combine his talent with the fact the best QB in football is under center, and there is big-time potential.
