Former Florida Gators star quarterback Anthony Richardson has not gotten off to a good start in the NFL.
After leaving the Gators to be the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, he was expected to be the team’s new franchise quarterback. Unfortunately, that has not been the case and Richardson didn’t start a single game during the 2025 season.
Now, the future is incredibly uncertain for Richardson. Many believe that he’ll be with a new team for the 2026 season via an offseason trade.
During his time at Florida, Richardson spent three years with the program. He was the team’s full-time starter his final year in 2022 and completed 53.8 percent of his pass attempts for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Richardson also ran for 654 yards and nine touchdowns that year.
When all was said and done, Richardson threw for 3,105 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions in his career with the Gators and racked up 1,116 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
Ahead of the offseason, the former Florida star has been connected to a new potential trade destination.
Former Florida Star Anthony Richardson Could Land With New AFC Team
Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine suggested the New York Jets as a potential destination for Richardson. After Dante Moore pulled his name out of the running to be the No. 2 overall pick, Richardson could make some level of sense.
“If Greg Roman winds up with the Jets vacant offensive coordinator job then Anthony Richardson could be an interesting developmental dart throw,” Ballentine wrote.
So far to begin his NFL career with the Colts, Richardson has played in 17 games over the course of three years. He has dealt with numerous injury issues, including an eye injury that kept him out for most of this season.
Richardson has completed just 50.6 percent of his passes for 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. In addition, he has picked up 634 yards and scored 10 more touchdowns on the ground.
Standing in at 6-foot-4 and 244 pounds, the 23-year-old signal caller is an elite athlete. He has great size and speed for the quarterback position. That athletic potential alone could make another NFL team decide to take a chance on him.
There Were Doubts Surrounding Richardson Leaving Florida
During his college career, Richardson did not gain much experience. He only started for one full season and did not perform at a very high level in that year.
While Indianapolis decided to take a chance on him, there were concerns from the beginning.
Even though the Gators saw the superstar potential that made Richardson the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft, there were too many inconsistencies. Staying in college one more year would have done the young quarterback a lot of good.
Hopefully, Richardson can find his footing in the NFL. Should he ever reach his full potential, the sky is the limit for what he could accomplish.
In the meantime, Florida fans will continue rooting him on as he tries to find another starting opportunity. Perhaps that chance could come with the Jets.
