Before the New York Mets wrap up their series with the Washington Nationals in a Thursday matinee contest, the team announced a few notable roster decisions.
First, as previously reported by several reporters, Luis Robert Jr. will head to the injured list with a back herniation in his lumbar. Another roster move included designating Carl Edwards Jr. for assignment.
MLBTradeRumors.com’s Steve Adams wrote (on Thursday morning):
“Edwards, 34, signed a minor league deal back in December. The longtime reliever opened the season as a starter in the Mets’ Syracuse rotation but was added to the big league bullpen earlier this month. He’s pitched well, holding opponents to one run in six innings. Edwards has punched out a whopping 44% of his opponents (11 of 25) but has also dished out four free passes already (16%).”
The corresponding moves for those roster decisions are to promote Austin Warren and Eric Wagaman from Triple-A.

Carl Edwards Jr. is a 12-year MLB veteran pitcher. He helped lift the Chicago Cubs to a World Series victory in 2016. He pitched in just six innings with the Mets this season, and gave up just one earned run, but the walks issued might have been enough for the Mets to demote him for now.
As Edwards Jr. goes through the DFA limbo process, it’s very plausible that he will end up electing MLB free agency here shortly due to not wanting to play in the minors again.
He has played for nine MLB organizations throughout his career, and after spending the first five seasons with the Cubs, Edwards Jr. has struggled to stay with an organization for more than one season.

Edwards Jr. has logged 292 total innings in his career over 302 appearances, and he holds a 3.91 ERA.
Here is the list of all MLB franchises he’s pitched for: New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, and Atlanta Braves.
He will likely have the decision if he wants to continue playing baseball or call it quits after 12 solid MLB seasons. After his time with the Cubs, Carl Edwards Jr. never really saw extended time with any of the teams mentioned, except the Washington Nationals.
2022 with the Nationals may have been his best season overall (2.76 ERA in 62 innings).
