Austin Warren: Breaking News

Warren will serve as the opening pitcher in Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, Chelsea Janes of SNY.tv reports. Warren has turned in an impressive 2.01 ERA and 1.12 WHIP through 22.1 innings with the Mets this season, and the team will now entrust him with getting through the top of St. Louis' order in Wednesday's contest. The team hasn't yet announced who will work as the bulk reliever.

Warren will operate as the Mets' opener on the mound Monday versus the Mariners, Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record reports. Warren will draw the first start of his major-league career, although he will likely be limited to just one inning on the mound. Southpaw Sean Manaea is a likely candidate to follow him in the bulk relief role against Seattle.

Warren (1-1) picked up the win Friday against the Marlins, striking out one in a perfect 10th inning. The 30-year-old right-hander needed only seven pitches (six strikes) to strand the phantom runner before becoming the pitcher of record when MJ Melendez walked it off in the bottom of the 10th. Warren has been used in a low-leverage role this season -- he has zero saves or holds in 13 appearances -- but he's been effective, producing a 1.47 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB in 18.1 innings.
