Edwards signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Friday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Edwards elected free agency after being DFA'd by the Mets, and he'll now aim to carve out a role for himself in the Tigers organization. The 34-year-old righty gave up just one earned run and struck out 11 batters in six innings with the Mets, though he's posted a 5.29 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 17 frames in Triple-A.
The Mets outrighted Edwards to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday. Edwards cleared waivers after being removed from the 40-man roster. He has the ability to elect free agency, though it's unclear whether he plans to exercise that right or remain in the organization. Edwards has posted a 1.50 ERA with 11 strikeouts over six frames during his time with the Mets this season.
The Mets designated Edwards for assignment Thursday. Edwards gave the Mets exactly what they needed, saving the bullpen with a couple extended relief outings over the last few days. However, he threw 50 pitches over 2.2 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Nationals, so the club is replacing him with a fresh bullpen arm in righty Austin Warren, who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.
