The Toronto Blue Jays owe it to Jose Berrios to find him a new home.
Berrios has been a reliable starter during his tenure with the Blue Jays. However, the offseason acquisitions of Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce leave him on the outside looking in. If he remains with the team, he likely begins the season in the bullpen in a long-relief role. This is especially true if they are able to secure another big-name starter for their rotation, as some have predicted.
Heavy.com has proposed this trade with the New York Yankees to find Berrios a new home and make up for the loss of slugger Bo Bichette.
Blue Jays Acquire:
Yankees Acquire:
- Jose Berrios ($19 million)
- Anthony Santander
- Ricky Tiedemann
- $10 Million
Making up for the loss of Bichette’s 18 home runs and 94 RBIs won’t be easy, but adding the speedy Jazz Chisholm Jr would make it less challenging for Toronto. This trade proposal also sees the team add outfielder prospect Spencer Jones. The lefty bat hit 35 home runs in the minors during the 2025 season.
This proposal has the Yankees acquiring Anthony Santander, pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann, Berrios, and $10 million in cash. Santander gives them the right-handed outfielder they want while Berrios stabilizes their rotation. This would allow them to take things slowly with their pitching prospects, who are nearing MLB readiness.
Additionally, the $10 million the Yankees would receive would ease the financial burden of adding Santander and Berrios.
Toronto Blue Jays Give Jose Berrios a Much-Needed Fresh Start
While replacing Bichette’s offensive production is one issue Toronto must address, finding a landing spot for Berrios is equally important.
The reliable starter could help out nearly every other team’s rotation.
Berrios has started at least 30 games in seven of his 10 MLB seasons, including the last five years. This kind of durability is something every team would want. That is especially true for the Yankees.
Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are starting the season on the shelf. By acquiring Berrios, they would insulate themselves against losing those starters in Spring Training, allowing them to take it slower with Cam Schlitter.
Anthony Santander Gives the New York Yankees Their Right-Handed Outfielder
According to a recent report, the Yankees are on the hunt for a right-handed outfielder. Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reveals what the Blue Jays’ rivals are after.
“The New York Yankees are searching for a right-handed outfield bat in free agency and the trade market, multiple league sources tell The Athletic,” Kuty wrote on January 31st, 2026. “The club has been gauging prices of potential additions after re-signing outfielder Cody Bellinger. One of the sources, however, said the team wasn’t leaning in any particular direction yet and, as of Saturday morning, wasn’t close to making a move.”
The report explains that the best available free agents that fit what they are seeking are Starling Marte, Tommy Pham, and Austin Slater. If Santander is healthy, he is better than all of those options.
Santander primarily plays left and right field in addition to being a DH. The veteran bat is also a switch-hitter, which would provide versatility to the Yankees’ batting order.
Jazz Chisholm Jr Gives Blue Jays Their Bo Bichette Replacement
As stated earlier, filling in for Bichette will not be easy. However, Chisholm provides more than enough offense to be an incredible member of the Blue Jays.
Chisholm had his best offensive season in 2025. In 130 games, he recorded 31 home runs, 80 RBIs, and 112 hits, in addition to recording 31 stolen bases. The infielder also slashed .242/.332/.481.
While Chisholm didn’t record more RBIs or hits than Bichette, he was among the league leaders in stolen bases in addition to knocking out 13 more home runs.
According to FanGraphs, Chisholm had a wRC+ of 126 in 2025. That is not too far behind Bichette’s 134 wRC+.
While adding someone who makes a lot of contact would be great for the Blue Jays, Chisholm can more than make up for the lost Bichette offense. Of course, it wouldn’t be through contact, but through his slugging ability and base-running.
The Blue Jays can find Berrios a new home and replace the lost offense of Bichette in one fell swoop. Would their rivals go for this kind of mutually beneficial deal?
Only time will tell. But it’s safe to say this would be highly unlikely, even if it makes incredible sense.
