Austin Slater: Breaking News

Slater and the Mets agreed on a contract Sunday, Chelsea Janes of SNY.tv reports. Slater will head to the Big Apple after being designated for assignment by the Marlins on Wednesday. The outfielder cleared waivers and electing free agency Sunday, and he has now quickly found a new home. Slater struggled to a .174 average with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base over 23 at-bats with Miami this season, but he owns a .777 career OPS versus left-handed pitchers, and he'll likely get a shot to start against southpaws with New York. Tommy Pham was designated for assignment by the Mets on Sunday, freeing up a spot on both the 40-man roster and major-league squad for Slater.

Slater cleared waivers and elected free agency Sunday, Craig Mish of FanDuel Sports Network Florida reports. The veteran outfielder was designated for assignment by Miami on Wednesday and will hit the open market rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A. Slater played in 12 games this season before being cut loose and had a .174/.286/.174 slash line in 28 plate appearances.

The Marlins designated Slater for assignment Wednesday, Craig Mish of FanDuel Sports Network Florida reports. Slater has seen sparse playing time in the outfield this season and has gone 4-for-23 (.174) with one steal, one RBI and a 4:9 BB:K this season. With no minor-league options left, the Marlins have elected to let go of the 33-year-old outfielder in order to open up a spot on the roster for Esteury Ruiz (oblique), who is meeting with the team in San Francisco on Friday, per Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com. Slater will go on waivers and could garner interest from a team looking to add depth in the outfield.
