The New York Mets lost 5-3 against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. After starter Nolan McLean was tossing a no-hitter into the sixth and the Mets led 3-0, Minnesota stormed back to score five unanswered in an especially poor outing by Devin Williams.
Jeff Passan wrote about the loss (on April 21): “The Mets lost their 12th straight after blowing a three-run lead. They didn’t get a hit over the final five innings. At 7-16, they are tied for the worst record in MLB. There is ugly, and then there is this. Juan Soto is expected to return tomorrow. That’s a start at least.”

Mets Make Odd MLB History in 12th Straight Loss

The New York Mets made MLB history with their 12th straight loss in April.
Per OptaStats: “The Mets are the first team in MLB history to finish with a winning record one year and then lose 12 straight games in April the following year.”
In the past 12 games, New York has scored just 22 runs. You could toss a lot of blame around, and that’s probably what will happen, but this unique MLB history shows you how disastrous this stretch has been. After losing the last two games to the Diamondbacks in a series two weeks ago, the Mets have been swept by the Athletics, Dodgers, and Cubs. Now, they dropped the first of a three-game set to the Twins.
Juan Soto will return to the lineup on Wednesday, but how much damage has already been done?
And Christian Scott (who hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2024) will start on Thursday.
Should Carlos Mendoza be fired? What did David Stearns do with this roster? Do the Mets need to start trading away mainstay players? (or those they thought would be mainstay players?)

The Mets Stars Have Not Shown Up
Quite frankly, the biggest reason the Mets have lost 12 in a row is that their “star” players have yet to show up in big moments throughout the series.
The last couple of games have been on Devin Williams, but Francisco Lindor, Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien, Luis Robert Jr., and Brett Baty have yet to hit any sort of big-time home run.
The starters have mostly kept New York in all of these games, but maybe Mendoza isn’t pulling the right strings.
There’s no doubt that David Stearns will get all the first-hand flak, and rightfully so; he’s the one who decided to make all of these acquisitions. And the worst part of him signing/ trading for new faces in the offseason is that the Mets fans have been given zero reason in the first three weeks to trust, or have any sort of emotional attachment to, any of Robert Jr., Bichette, Semien, or Polanco.
A true nightmare in Queens.
