The New York Giants had three different bits of news surface on the evening of September 22, as Week 4 got underway for most teams around the NFL.

Firstly, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the “[Philadelphia] Eagles claimed former Giants WR Xavier Gipson off waivers today and waived OL Kenyon Green.

Gipson’s tenure with the G-Men was brief. Big Blue claimed the wide receiver/returner off waivers from the crosstown rival New York Jets, but then needed the roster spot due to a long list of Week 3 injuries.

In the end, lead returner Gunner Olszewski was healthy enough to suit up for the Giants on Sunday Night Football, making Gipson expendable. Not long after, he became the official odd man out for Big Blue.

Although Gipson’s departure won’t keep the Giants up at night, the landing spot is a bitter one. Ever since Saquon Barkley’s move to Philadelphia, it seems to sting just a little bit more each time the Eagles target or pick up a former Giant.

Giants Cut Tomon Fox — for Now — Work Out 4 Linebackers

The other bits of Giants news on Monday evening were two-pronged. According to KPRC 2 NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the “Giants worked out Jonas Griffith, Luke Masterson, Ty Summers, [and] Jacoby Windmon.”

These players are all veteran linebackers who have experience on special teams.

“Another LB/ST workout,” The Athletic’s NYG beat reporter Dan Duggan weighed in after seeing the news. Summers was with the Giants last season and into training camp before getting cut with an injury.

Duggan also reported that “the Giants cut OLB Tomon Fox with the intention of signing him back to the practice squad.

Fox was signed to the active roster ahead of Week 3, as the Giants were short on healthy bodies. He appeared on 19 special teams snaps and another 14 defensive snaps. Pro Football Focus credited Fox with 1 quarterback pressure.

More on the Giants’ Week 4 Linebacker Workouts

Giants fans should remember Summers. The NFL journeyman appeared in 16 games for Big Blue last year, taking the field for 272 special teams snaps and another 112 on defense.

Considering all the injuries at linebacker, Summers would have surely made the roster or practice squad this summer had he not gotten injured himself. Now, he’s eligible to return after a recent injury settlement with the Giants.

Summers is 29 years old, and he has accumulated 89 total tackles (1 for a loss), 2 pass breakups and 1 fumble recovery since 2019.

Windmon is much younger, having just turned 24 years old. He spent his only regular season of NFL action with the Carolina Panthers last year, appearing in 8 games and starting 2.

Windmon was credited with 22 total tackles (1 for a loss), 1.5 sacks, 2 QB hits and 2 pass breakups in 2024.

Griffith is a former undrafted prospect, like Windmon, but his age is similar to Summers at 28 years old. He appeared in 22 games with the Denver Broncos from 2021 through 2022, starting 12 of those games.

The 6-foot-4 linebacker has racked up 92 career tackles (4 for a loss), 5 QB hits, 1 pass breakup, 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery.

Finally, Masterson is a 27-year-old linebacker who has appeared in 37 games for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2022 through 2024, starting 10 of them.

He has a similar level of defensive experience and accomplishment as Griffith, compiling 103 total tackles (4 for a loss), 1 QB hit, 1 pass breakup and 2 forced fumbles.

The Giants have not signed any of these four players as of September 22.
