The New York Jets have brought back a fan favorite quarterback.
Gang Green announced in a press release that they have brought back undrafted free agent passer Brady Cook to the team’s practice squad.
Jets Bring Back a Young Developmental QB
The initial 53-man roster cuts left the Jets with only two passers on the team: Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor.
Gang Green waived Cook and Adrian Martinez. Cook cleared waivers and returned to the practice squad.
The former Missouri product had some moments during the preseason. He appeared in all three games and totaled 235 passing yards, had a one touchdown to one interception ratio, and completed 66% of his passes (25-for-38).
Jets Still Have Spots to Fill on the Practice Squad
The green and white announced the signing of 13 players to their practice squad. Typically, teams are only allowed 16 players on the practice squad.
However, the Jets get a roster exemption for German offensive lineman Leander Wiegand, who is a part of the NFL’s international pathway program.
So the team is allowed to have 17 players on the practice squad. That means they still have three spots available to add some more players ahead of the season.
All of the players the Jets have signed to the practice squad so far had spent the summer with the team over the last couple of months.
Breaking Down Offensive Players on Jets Practice Squad
The group included four wide receivers, two offensive linemen, and one quarterback (aforementioned Cook).
Tyler Johnson made the initial 53-man roster but was cut after waivers. Johnson is a vested veteran, so he didn’t have to clear waivers and was immediately eligible to join the Jets‘ practice squad.
The other receivers were the young bucks from camp: Brandon Smith, Jamaal Pritchett, and Quentin Skinner.
Wiegand was one of the offensive linemen, and the other was Kohl Levao, who came from the developmental leagues (XFL and UFL).
Breaking Down Defensive Players on Jets Practice Squad
The only safety to crack the group is undrafted free agent rookie Dean Clark. He had a sterling preseason, but it wasn’t enough to crack the 53-man roster.
After clearing waivers, he rejoined the team on the practice squad.
As expected, defensive back Jordan Clark, son of ESPN NFL analyst Ryan Clark, returned to the practice squad.
A pair of defensive linemen made the practice squad.
Undrafted free agent Payton Page earned his place. Eric Watts was an undrafted free agent last year, but unlike in 2024, he couldn’t crack the 53-man roster this time around.
A pair of linebackers made the PS: Aaron ‘Boog’ Smith and Jackson Sirmon.
Jets Have a Backup Emergency Kicker Just in Case
Surprisingly, Harrison Mevis, ‘The Thiccer Kicker’, was not picked up by any other NFL team. That provides another placekicker option for the green and white, just in case.
If Nick Folk runs out of gas as a 40-year-old, the Jets won’t have to look far to find another viable option on special teams.
