Ryan Lochte is entering a completely different phase of life — and fans can’t get over how different the Olympic legend looks now.
The 12-time Olympic medalist recently went viral after appearing in a new Instagram video announcing that he is joining Missouri State University’s swimming and diving program as an assistant coach. But while the career move itself made headlines, it was Lochte’s dramatic transformation that immediately grabbed attention online.
In the video, the 41-year-old swimmer appeared with slicked-back dark hair, facial hair, and a noticeably more rugged look compared to the clean-cut image fans remember from his Olympic peak.
Several outlets and fans online described the former Team USA star as “unrecognizable” after the clip surfaced.
Ryan Lochte Announces New Coaching Career
Lochte shared the announcement in a social media video, explaining that coaching has unexpectedly become a major passion for him in recent years.
“Over the last couple of years, something so unexpected happened,” Lochte said in the video. “I might actually be more passionate about coaching than competing.”
The Olympic swimmer added that while he had “a pretty good swimming career,” he believes he “might even be a better swim coach.”
Lochte also joked about the transition away from competition.
“So, I traded in my goggles for a stopwatch,” he said. “And I’m not gonna lie, it looks pretty good on me.”
According to reports, Lochte’s coaching position with Missouri State University is expected to officially begin later this year pending final approval.
Lochte Became One of America’s Biggest Olympic Stars
Long before the coaching announcement and viral transformation, Lochte built one of the most decorated careers in American swimming history.
Across four Olympic Games, Lochte won 12 Olympic medals, including six gold medals, becoming one of the most recognizable swimmers of his generation alongside Michael Phelps.
Lochte starred for Team USA at the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2012 London Olympics, and 2016 Rio Olympics. At his peak, he became known not only for his performances in the pool, but also for his outspoken personality, signature style, and celebrity status outside of swimming.
He later appeared on multiple reality television shows, including “Dancing With the Stars” and Peacock’s “The Traitors.”
Ryan Lochte’s Personal Life Has Also Made Headlines
The coaching announcement comes during a difficult stretch in Lochte’s personal life.
His estranged wife, Kayla Rae Reid, filed for divorce after seven years of marriage. The former couple share three children together.
In recent months, the split has generated significant public attention online, particularly as Lochte has continued publicly sharing moments with his current girlfriend, Molly Gilliham.
Gilliham celebrated Lochte’s coaching announcement in the comments section of his post, writing, “I love you. I am beyond, beyond proud of you. This is what you were made to do!!!”
Despite the public scrutiny surrounding his personal life, Lochte appears focused on moving forward both personally and professionally as he begins the next chapter of his career outside the pool.
And while fans may still be adjusting to his dramatic new look, Lochte made one thing clear in his announcement video — he’s embracing change fully.
