The Milwaukee Brewers’ No.4 prospect on MLB Pipeline, starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, will make his debut on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.
While Brewers fans are sure to be excited to watch the rising star take the mound for the first time, Misiorowski’s promotion to MLB negatively affected another player on Milwaukee’s roster.
A former mainstay in the Cleveland Guardians’ rotation is unhappy with a decision made following Misiorowski’s arrival to the Brewers and has decided to take action.
Aaron Civale Requests Trade
Right-hander Aaron Civale has requested a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers after learning that he will be moved to the bullpen, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic on Thursday. Rosenthal added that Civale’s agent, Jack Toffey, passed along the request to Milwaukee’s general manager Matt Arnold.
“The promotion of Misiorowski, who will make his major-league debut against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night, left the Brewers with a decision,” wrote Rosenthal. “Civale was the odd man out in a rotation that includes Freddy Peralta, Chad Patrick, Quinn Priester, and José Quintana — and other options at Triple-A and on the injured list.”
Toffey told Rosenthal that Civale may not be the only Brewers’ starting pitcher dealt at or before this year’s trade deadline.
“I’ve heard from other teams, through their channels of communication, that they have a plethora of starting pitching and are looking for trade partners, maybe not just on Aaron, but maybe another pitcher,” Toffey communicated to Rosenthal on Thursday. “That’s my understanding.”
The Brewers acquired Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays last July in a trade for minor league infielder Gregory Barrios. The veteran turned 30 on Thursday and made 19 starts in a Brewers uniform, five of them this season. Civale was activated from the 15-day injured list on May 22 after suffering a strained left hamstring at the end of March.
What Teams Could Show Interest in Civale’s Services?
While Civale has not performed horribly on the mound for the Milwaukee Brewers, it’s clear he would prefer to continue his career as a starting pitcher. He owns a 4.91 ERA and 7.8 strikeouts per nine in 2025 after posting a 4.36 ERA and a 4.74 FIP in 31 combined starts last season, split between the Tampa Bay Rays and Brewers.
“Aaron is not angry or banging his fist on the table,” Toffey told Rosenthal. “But it’s a little confusing because he did not pitch his way out of the rotation whatsoever. It’s more of a subjective choice the organization is making.”
With a trade likely, which teams could be in the market for a starting pitcher? Civale hits free agency at the end of the year, making him a half-season rental.
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation has suffered countless injuries, with Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Tony Gonsolin, and Roki Sasaki all on the injured list. Manager Dave Roberts could find use for Civale as a fourth or fifth starter, but he might end up back in the bullpen upon their return.
The New York Yankees’ pitching staff has ridden the success of Max Fried and Carlos Rodon. Still, there are legitimate question marks about Luis Gil’s health, Will Warren’s ability to pitch deep into postseason games against potent lineups, and whether they’d prefer to keep Ryan Yarbrough in the rotation or transition him back to the bullpen. Acquiring Civale might also complicate the decision about Marcus Stroman’s return from the injured list.
