The New York Mets are on fire this MLB offseason. They’ve put together the best week of the hot stove season. First, late last week, the Mets acquired Bo Bichette on a three-year, $126 million deal. Then, David Stearns backed that up by acquiring Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox to shore up the outfield a bit.
And most recently, the Mets pulled off the biggest trade of the offseason on Wednesday by adding Freddy Peralta to headline their starting rotation. Following the Mets’ big week of moves, owner Steve Cohen appears to be pleased with the slew of big offseason moves and took to social media to express that.

What Was Steve Cohen’s Message?
It is a rarity when Steve Cohen posts on X (formerly Twitter), so it kind of becomes headline news when it happens.
To preface why I’m even sharing his most recent tweet, Cohen tweeted six days ago “let me know when you see smoke”. The internet believed he was alluding to the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, which is plausible, as Tucker signed with the Dodgers just hours after.

To follow up on that tweet, Cohen posted, “For those who don’t understand the pope election reference , we are waiting for a decision. That’s all I know”
It’s a big vague, but that opened the door for those who follow the Mets to believe big moves may be imminent, and “big moves” might be an understatement. New York may have won the MLB offseason since that Cohen tweet.
So, of course, Cohen’s most recent tweet reads: “What an incredible week. Let’s go Mets !”

Do the Mets Need to Make Any More Moves?
This is a serious question, as the New York Mets have pretty much made the biggest acquisitions they could have over the past week. Before adding Freddy Peralta, their frontline starters were Clay Holmes, David Peterson, and Nolan McLean.
Bringing in Freddy Peralta adds a strong layer of depth, a true ace, and a starter who will almost certainly make 30+ starts. He’s coming off his best season in MLB, where he posted a 2.70 ERA over 176.2 innings.
Bo Bichette will play third base, and Robert Jr. will man the center field spot.
The Mets lost Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz to start MLB free agency, but they have rallied to acquire or sign the likes of Peralta, Bo Bichette, Robert Jr., Jorge Polanco, Devin Williams, and Luke Weaver.
There’s still a chance the Mets go out and acquire either another outfielder or another starter, but they could theoretically be done making additions this offseason, and would be considered a successful winter.
After a disastrous end to the 2025 season, the Mets are gearing up to compete in a strong National League with several new members of the roster.
