Veteran wide receiver Jauan Jennings left his NFL free agency visit to Kevin O’Connell and the Minnesota Vikings without a contract this week. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Vikings hosted Jennings on Tuesday night.
CBS Sports’s Zachary Pereles argued days later that Minnesota shouldn’t wait any longer and sign the wideout.
On a list where he named the best remaining free agency fit for every team, Pereles picked Jennings for the Vikings.
“This one is straightforward,” wrote Pereles. “Jennings was visiting the Vikings on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“He’d be a nice add to join Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.”
The Vikings lost the team’s WR3 from last year, Jalen Nailor, in 2026 NFL free agency. This past weekend, the 2026 NFL Draft came and went without O’Connell and the team addressing receiver.
Jennings possesses five years of NFL experience. He became a regular starter for the San Francisco 49ers over the past two years.
In 2025, Jennings registered 55 catches for 643 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games. He averaged 11.7 yards per reception.
How Jauan Jennings Could Fit in Kevin O’Connell’s Vikings Offense
With Minnesota arguably neglecting wideout in NFL free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft, the Vikings have 2025 third-round pick Tai Felton set to be the team’s WR3.
That has a lot of the Vikings faithful feeling uneasy. Felton posted three catches for 25 yards as a rookie last season.
In Jennings, Minnesota could add a reliable veteran. He’s reached at least 250 receiving yards in each of his five NFL seasons.
That production makes Jennings an ideal replacement for Nailor. That’s likely why the Vikings hosted Jennings on a free agency visit.
The past two seasons for Minnesota, Nailor eclipsed the 400-yard mark with under 30 receptions and 55 targets. Nailor averaged 15.3 yards per reception last season.
Jennings isn’t as much of a big-play threat. He recorded 11.7 yards per catch in 2025. But on a great offense, Jennings is best suited for a WR3 role.
Nailor signed a free agency contract with the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason.
Vikings Missed at WR During 2026 NFL Draft
Minnesota hosted Jennings on his visit the week after the team didn’t add a receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft.
That surprised pundits around the league. It also led to a lot of analysts criticizing the Minnesota draft class. The Vikings didn’t select a receiver despite having nine selections in the draft.
Following the draft, though, the team added four wideouts in undrafted free agency — Shaleak Knotts, Dillon Bell, Luke Wysong and Marcus Sanders. Those four wideouts are set to compete with Dontae Fleming, Jeshaun Jones, Myles Price and Joaquin Davis for the final couple roster spots at receiver.
Given the team’s WR3 situation, any of those wideouts could earn the spot after Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison on the team’s receiver pecking order. But more than likely, Felton will possess an edge on earning that role.
That is, unless the Vikings add a veteran such as Jennings. Given the team wants to return to the postseason in the highly competitive NFC North, acquiring a more capable depth receiver, like Jennings, would be a wise move.
