Tonight is the season 2 premiere of Wahlburgers. Let’s get to know mom Alma Wahlberg in our 5 Fast Facts below.

1. One of the Wahlbergs’ Restaurant’s Is Named After Her

When the Wahlberg boys decided to open the two restaurants Walburger and Alma Nove, they brought on their mother as a hostess and presence in the eateries. This really brought some action in Alma’s life. We see her working in both places on the show Wahlburgers. The Alma Nove website describes the meaning behind the restaurant name, the menu, and the ambience.

Alma Nove is Hingham’s premiere waterfront restaurant inspired by a blend of flavors from Italy and the surrounding Mediterranean. Named after the Wahlberg family matriarch, Alma, and her nine (nove) children, the restaurant features an eclectic menu of antipasti, specialty pastas, fresh off the boat seafood, and chops prepared on a wood burning grill.

This just shows you how much Alma means to her children. The boys always try to fight to be her favorite and Donnie can’t start a tour without talking to his mom on the phone before opening night.

2. Alma Divorced In 1982

Donnie Wahlberg was actually named after his father Donald Edmond Wahlberg, Sr. Prior to meeting Alma, Donald was married and has three children from his first marriage – Donna, Scott, and Buddy. Donald was a teamster (a truck driver) who worked as a delivery driver while Alma was a bank clerk and nurse’s aide. The two divorced in 1982.

3. Her Recipes Are Featured on the A&E Website

Paul isn’t the only cook in the family. Mom Alma is praised for her cooking and even has her recipes featured on the A&E site. Each dish is one of her kids’ favorites, (ie. Mark’s Favorite – Lasagna and Debbie’s Favorite – Ma’s Mac and Cheese). There was actually an episode on Wahlburgers where Alma wanted to create her own cookbook. Instead, son Paul printed several of her recipes on the restaurant’s take out menus so that families could take pleasure in Alma’s creations in their own kitchens.

4. Alma’s Most Famous Recipe Is Her American Chop Suey

Donnie, Mark, and son Paul always brag about Alma’s American Chop Suey dish that she used to serve them when they were growing up. We even see it featured on the show. Check out the recipe, published with Parade, below:

    • Susan we also call it Goulash in my home, my grandmother started that way back in the 30’s….she was also German so maybe there’s something to be said for calling it Goulash vs. American chop suey…. American chop suey in my home is made with noodles and chicken/celery (and no it wasn’t chicken noodle soup, it had a different flavor) and I hated it growing up.

  1. Where are the other grown Wahlburg kids? Who is Brandon’s father? Do the others not want to be involved? Seems Mark is closer to his friends than rest of family.

    • I believe Mark was quoted saying “his Mother and he are not always on the best of terms, however he still takes care of all her needs as does Donnie….and the other children. He said on Kelly and Michael it’s always been that way with him and his Mom. Pretty sad if that’s really true.

  2. Similar story in a way …I to am married to a teamsters truck driver..still married 36 years ..4 kids ..lost my daughter Kelsey 1 hour after birth …love my Grandkids..family and life itself…I hope I can come to Hingham someday and have the pleasure of eating at both restaurants and maybe be lucky enough to meet Almas & Paul ad I love the show Wahlburgers
