Cooking guru Giada De Laurentiis and her husband Todd Thompson have decided to call it quits after being married since 2003. Giada is most known for her TV show on the Food Network Giada At Home. She also appears on the Today Show as a contributor and owns several restaurants. Read on for the facts on Giada’s marriage, her child with Thompson, and all the info on her soon-to-be-ex-husband.
1. Giada Announced Her Split From Thompson On Her Website
Just as Gwyneth Paltrow did, Giada opted to post a statement about ending her marriage via her website. Here is the statement that was posted:
After an amicable separation since July, Todd and I have decided to end our marriage. Although our decision to separate comes with a great deal of sadness, our focus on the future and overwhelming desire for our family’s happiness has given us the strength to move forward on separate, yet always connected paths. Todd and I share a beautiful daughter and a lifetime of great memories that we both treasure more than anything. We are so thankful for our friends and family, and really appreciate the support in this time of change.
Giada also posted the same message on her Facebook page.
2. Thompson Knew Nothing About Cooking When He Met Giada
The couple married on May 25, 2003 and the two have actually been together for over two decades, since Giada was 19 years old. While Giada is a celebrity chef now, Thompson knew nothing about cooking when they met and he works as a fashion designer for Anthropologie. Giada previously stated:
My husband was used to opening cans — Chef Boyardee, frozen food, whatever. He didn’t know much about cooking, bless his soul. He wasn’t that hard to impress [laughing], but he’s come a long way. Parmesan cheese never existed for him, not even the kind in the green container. Tomato sauce was watered-down ketchup.
When we first met, I didn’t have any money because I was in college, and he paid every time we went out to dinner. So I’d show my love for him by making a meal. And to this day, that is one of the ways that I show how much I appreciate him.

3. Giada Has One Child With Thompson
Thompson and wife Giada have one daughter, Jade Marie De Laurentiis-Thompson, who was born on March 29, 2008. Jade was actually named after her mom because “Giada” is actually Italian for “Jade.” Giada adores being a mother, but says she has no other plans for children because she wants to stay focused on her career. She previously stated:
I have so many babies: the show, Todd, and Jade.
4. In 2011, Giada Opened Up About the Struggles In Her Marriage
For an interview with Redbook in 2011, Giada opened up about issues that were going on in her marriage, explaining:
I think it can be hard for any man to sometimes be upstaged by his wife. So when I’m home, I work very hard to be Todd’s wife and Jade’s mother. I have no problem going back to those traditional roles. I try to be Giada, the young girl that he met 20 years ago and fell in love with. All men want to be treated like kings in a relationship, and I think if women don’t indulge that sometimes, their men are likely to stray and look for someone who can give that to them. It’s simple. It’s not brain surgery.
5. The Couple Endured A Cheating Scandal With John Mayer
In 2011, there were rumors that Giada and John Mayer were carrying on some sort of flirtation or scandal together. Giada opened up about how embarrassed her husband’s family was over the rumors:
The John Mayer incident was completely unexpected. I was shocked. And not so much for me, but for my husband and family. My family is used to that sort of thing. But my husband’s family is not. Todd was embarrassed that his family in Michigan would see it and think, What is going on over there in Hollywood?…What made it all even more surprising is that I haven’t had any contact with John Mayer in three years. You know how you’ll briefly get introduced to somebody? Maybe we chatted for five minutes, but I wouldn’t consider that intimate….I know these things happen, but maybe I was naive to think that they are usually based on some facts … I think the only things that could possibly have tied us together is that we were at the same hotel that weekend in question — which, by the way, my husband was with me there as well.
