Shawn Mendes took time on TK to address the persistent rumors that he is gay. The “Stitches” singer got on Snapchat and released a video telling his fans and followers, “I’m not gay.”
He’s also doesn’t have a girlfriend at the moment. The 17-year-old pop artist was linked to Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello last fall, but they each put that rumor to rest in interviews with Entertainment Tonight in December.
“No, we are just friends. We’re just friends. We’re not dating,” said Mendes, who toured with the girl group and Austin Mahone last year.
Cabello did date Mahone while touring together, but confirmed to ET that she and Mendes “we’re just friends. He’s like one of my best friends. He’s amazing.” The “just friends” collaborated on the duet, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which was the lead single on his revisited version of his debut album, Handwritten.
Mendes clued into the speculation about his sexuality while reading the comments on YouTube videos of past interviews he had done. He noticed “a lot of people” saying that he gave off a “gay vibe.” His full speech is as follows:
So I don’t usually do this and bring up problems, but I was on YouTube just watching some of my interviews, and I was going down the comments and noticed a lot of people were saying that I gave them a ‘gay vibe’.
First of all, I’m not gay. Second of all, it shouldn’t make a difference if I was or if I wasn’t. The focus should be on the music and not my sexuality.
Now I know 99 percent of you guys aren’t making assumptions like this, but this is just for the one percent of you that are. I just want you guys – before you judge someone on the way they speak or act – I want you guys to think, ‘Hey, maybe I shouldn’t be judging someone’ or ‘Wait, it actually doesn’t even matter. They can do or be or feel however they want to feel.
As for what Mendes is looking for in a potential girlfriend, the Canadian singer is looking for a brunette with a good sense of humor. He told Notion magazine (via J-14):
I really like funny girls, girls with a witty sense of humor; so if someone is able to catch onto what I’m saying very quickly, I find that very attractive. I really like brunettes…and also, dancers! I have a thing for dancers!
Mendes kicks off his world tour on July 15 in Boca Raton, Florida. He finishes up the North American leg on August 21 in Toronto and then heads to the South Pacific in October to perform in the Philippines and Australia. Click here for all of his upcoming tour dates.
