Dev Patel as older Saroo Brierley
Dev Patel has been through the awards circuit before. Nearly a decade ago, he was the star of Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, which went on to win the 2008 Academy Award for Best Picture. This time, with his new film Lion, things are a little different because he's finally up for an Oscar himself. Lion earned Patel a nomination for Best Supporting Actor and he's already won a BAFTA award for his performance.
Lion marks the feature film debut for director Garth Davis. It tells the inspiring true story of Saroo Brierley, an Indian orphan who was separated from his family and later adopted by an Australian couple. As a young man, he used Google Earth to track down his biological family in India. Luke Davies' Oscar-nominated script is based on A Long Way Home, a memoir written by Brieley with Larry Buttrose. In addition to the Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor nominations, the film is also up for Best Supporting Actress for Nicole Kidman, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.
