May Day Quotes

May Day is finally here, but its long history is one that goes unknown by many. May Day is a spring tradition in many cultures, and has also been chosen as the official date for International Workers' Day. On May Day 1886, 200,000 workmen went on strike for an eight-hour work day which became known as the Haymarket Affair. Three years later, the International Socialist Conference officially declared May 1 an international holiday for labor. The holiday was contemptuous in the US during the early Cold War. President Eisenhower, in fact, renamed May 1st "Loyalty Day" to try and avoid solidarity amongst the workers in the country. The resolution he signed declared May 1 "a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States of America and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom."
