USMNT host Honduras in San Jose Friday night in a huge match for their World Cup implications.
After two games in the Hex, CONCACAF’s final round of World Cup qualifying, USA is sitting at the bottom. Two games, two losses, and a goal differential of -5. Bobby Wood, DeAndre Yedlin and Fabian Johnson are all injured in some capacity and will miss Friday’s match. It doesn’t look good.
For Bruce Arena, it’s all part of his turnaround as manager of USMNT. Arena has assembled a squad of mostly MLS players for USA’s two upcoming qualifiers, but he has more than just roster decisions to combat in his first months as the face of USMNT.
After the recent comments made my Jozy Altidore and Alejandro Bedoya, it would seem that USA is far from a cohesive unit. Arena has personalities to manage among a frustrated squad, and he has to get his locker room settled quick. It’s worth noting that teams that haven’t earned a point in their first three Hex matches have never qualified for a World Cup.
