The North Carolina Tar Heels have had one of the best players in college basketball all season long in Caleb Wilson. Wilson entered the season as a five-star recruit and the eighth-best recruit in the country. With him on the roster, UNC is ranked 17th in the country.

Despite being a true freshman, Wilson is widely viewed as one of the top picks in the 2026 NBA Draft. Most draft analysts have him being taken either third or fourth. He is averaging 19.8 rebounds, 9.4 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks on 57 percent shooting from the field.

Wilson has been dealing with an injury to his left hand that he suffered against Miami. Now, he has suffered another devastating injury that will end his season.

North Carolina Tar Heels Forward Caleb Wilson Suffers Season-Ending Injury

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Wilson suffered a season-ending thumb injury on his right hand. Charania described it as a non-contact injury, which makes things even worse. This happened in practice on Thursday ahead of a mega matchup against rival Duke.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel added some additional context to the injury, claiming he hurt it while dunking in practice.

Wilson had season-ending surgery to address the broken thumb and should be cleared for the NBA Draft process when that happens later this summer. He had just been cleared for individual workouts, so this is a devastating blow for the Tar Heels.

North Carolina was expected to compete for the national championship with Wilson on the roster. According to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, they currently sit as a five-seed. That seeding could be affected now that the selection committee knows that Wilson is out for the rest of the season.

With Wilson on the roster, the Tar Heels amassed a 24-6 record overall and an 11-5 record in the ACC. Without Wilson, they are now without their leading scorer, rebounder, and assister. That will make it much harder for them to win a national title.

North Carolina Has no Shot to Win a National Championship

Now that Wilson is finished, the Tar Heels have no chance to win a national championship. He was easily the best candidate of anyone in the country to carry someone to a title. Without him, it becomes almost impossible for them to win it all.

With Wilson out, that means center Henri Veesar will have an even bigger role to play in the frontcourt. The Tar Heels are led by their frontcourt, and now Veesar becomes the number-one scoring option on the entire team. Seth Trimble now has more responsibility on his shoulders, too.

Hubert Davis has a massive challenge in front of him for the rest of the season. He has to rally the team around 3-point shooting and defense, some of which they struggle with. Wilson ends his North Carolina career after playing in just 24 games.
