Henrik Lundqvist reflected on Sweden’s gold medal run at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He called winning the gold medal a dream come true and one of Sweden’s most memorable hockey moments.
The former New York Rangers goaltender was in his rookie season when he made his Olympics debut. Lundqvist vividly remembers being selected to the Swedish men’s Olympic hockey roster and taking in the experience.
“Being named to the team was very exciting, going to Torino. And I remember walking into the village for the first time and see all these athletes, it was a lot to take in,” Lundqvist told the Olympics’ YouTube channel. “It was obviously a big moment in my career to get that opportunity to play in the Olympics for the first time.”
Lundqvist was surrounded by some of the greatest players in Swedish hockey history, including several he grew up idolizing. He credited the team’s balance of veterans and youth for their gold medal victory.
“It was just a dream come true, it was so much that I still to this day remember,” Lundqvist said. “That’s why I started playing the game of hockey. I watched the national team, play on TV.”
He added:
“As a kid, I thought to myself, ‘One day I want to be in that position.’ So, of course, it’s a great feeling when you think back to the experience itself, but also winning.
Henrik Lundqvist Reveals What it Takes to Win Olympic Gold in Men’s Hockey
Henrik Lundqvist also shared his insights on what it takes to win an Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey. He stressed the importance of every player understanding their role and fully embracing the head coach’s vision for the national team.
Players might have more important roles with their respective NHL teams, Lundqvist noted. However, he emphasized that they must set aside their egos to achieve success.
“It comes down to the group. It’s not about one or two players that needs to have a strong tournament, it’s about the group, the team game needs to be tight,” Lundqvist told the Olympics’ YouTube channel. “For that to happen, communication early on, to understand your roles, I think is going to be critical. You only have a few days to prepare going into an Olympic tournament.”
He added:
“You have players playing in the NHL and they come over here and get two practices, a couple of meetings, and then off you go.”
