Even if there isn’t any snow outside your door, there will be some on your television screen tonight. That’s because CBS aired Frosty The Snowman for the first time this holiday season on Friday, November 25. The special airs again on Saturday, December 10. Read on for a preview of the iconic special and to find out when it airs.
Frosty The Snowman first aired on CBS on December 7, 1969 and is narrated by Jimmy Durante, in the legendary comedian’s final role. It was produced by Rankin/Bass Productions, the same studio known for the stop-motion films Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town. (Conveniently – or rather, inconveniently if you like both of them – ABC is airing Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town on November 25 as well!) However, Frosty was done with traditional hand-drawn animation.
Frosty not only features the iconic title song, but also has a unique animation style. It was designed to look like a moving Christmas card to tell the story of the magical snowman.
After Frosty airs, CBS will run Frosty Returns, a 1992 film co-directed by Bill Melendez, the same animator behind the iconic Peanuts specials. Jonathan Winters is the narrator and John Goodman voices Frosty. Oddly enough, Frosty Returns is a production from Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video.
