The last new episode of I Love Lucy aired back in 1957, but 59 years later, the show is still a major part of the American lexicon. Therefore, CBS has been airing the I Love Lucy Christmas Special for the past three years. On Friday, December 2, CBS aired the special for the first time this holiday season. The episode is airing again on Sunday, December 25 at 8 p.m. ET. Read on for a preview and to find out when it starts.
The “I Love Lucy Christmas Show” first aired on December 24, 1956 and features Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ricky (Desi Arnaz) are joined by Fred (William Frawley) and Ethel (Vivian Vance) as they reminisce about the best moments in their lives while trimming a Christmas Tree.
Unlike other beloved Christmas specials, the I Love Lucy Christmas episode wasn’t intended to become an annual tradition. In fact, CBS didn’t re-air the special again until 1989. A year later, the wrap-around segments were shown in colorized form and it wasn’t shown again until December 2013.
The 2013 broadcast drew an astonishing 8.65 million viewers, more than both NBC’s broadcast of It’s A Wonderful Life and ABC’s Happiness Is A Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown. CBS aired the episode again in 2014 and 2015.
Each year, CBS pairs it with a new colorized episode. This year, CBS will air “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” in color for the first time. The episode first aired in February 1955 and shows Lucy’s hapless attempt to be a showgirl in a musical. (Of course, Lucille Ball really was in MGM musicals before she was a TV star.)
