Matt Lauer has been fired for inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace and the announcement came at the top of the Today Show this morning. The scandal was revealed by Lauer’s co-workers Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb, who said that today was a sad day for the show. See the video of the announcement above. Guthrie and Kotb revealed that they are heartbroken over the news as they read a statement from executive Andy Lack. In Lack’s official statement addressed to “Colleagues,” he said, “On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
Lack continued, “Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender. We are deeply saddened by this turn of events. But we will face it together as a news organization — and do it in as transparent a manner as we can. To that end, Noah and I will be meeting with as many of you as possible throughout the day today to answer your questions.” Matt Lauer has been an employee at NBC for twenty years as a lead anchor and fixture on the network. He often conducts high-profile interviews with celebrities, politicians and musicians.
Previously, Lauer sat down with Bill O’Reilly and he interviewed O’Reilly about his sexual harassment allegations. He said to O’Reilly that, “You were probably the last person they wanted to fire.” Today, the tables appear to have turned, as Lauer is now at the center of a similar scandal.
President Donald Trump has already commented on Lauer’s scandal and used the opportunity to take aim at NBC execs, specifically Andy Lack, who made the Lauer statement. Trump tweeted, “Wow, Matt Lauer was just fired from NBC for “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.” But when will the top executives at NBC & Comcast be fired for putting out so much Fake News. Check out Andy Lack’s past!”
This is the first report of any sexual misconduct or inappropriate sexual behavior made against Matt Lauer in his lengthy career. However, in 2016, he was hit with cheating allegations that he had had an affair with Natalie Morales. The news came about when Morales moved to Access Hollywood, but both Lauer and Morales denied the allegations. At the time, a source told Page Six that, “There’s speculation it’s one of the reasons why she’s moving . . . Matt didn’t want to work with her. There’s an awkwardness between Matt and Natalie … He protected her for a long time and now it seems like something has gone awry.” On the other hand, another source stated, “There’s no validity to it. Zero fact. NBC News loves her. Her contract was up in the fall and she wanted to try something new. She wanted to go to LA. [NBC] wanted to keep her.”
