Full Release: DVD/Blu-Ray

Nine DVD/Blu-Ray

You know, sometimes these things ain’t easy. Some weeks we get awesome flicks that we can’t wait to take home and watch over and over, and some weeks – well, read for yourself. Here’s the new releases on DVD and Blu-Ray for May 4th.

Tooth Fairy – You know, I like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He was smart enough to get out of the cesspool of professional wrestling before it ate him alive, and he seems to be doing well enough for himself as an actor. But man, he needs to actually make a good movie once in a while. This latest casts him as a hockey player who… has to be the Tooth Fairy. Why? Why make this movie? Is even one child’s life going to be saved by it?

Nine – This movie has a pile of incredibly hot chicks (Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, etc) and Daniel Day-Lewis, maybe the greatest actor of ever – so why was it such a chore to watch? Lord if I know, but Rob Marshall’s musical tribute to Fellini’s magnum opus just made my head hurt. Maybe I just don’t dig musicals? I dunno. Your girlfriend might want to watch this with you. Do they make iPods small enough to actually hide inside your ear canal?

Leap Year – I like Amy Adams, I do. But do I really need to watch her in a dishwater-generic rom-com about falling in love with the Wrong Irish Guy? I… I don’t, and I’m not sure anybody else does either. Maybe your Mom would like it?

Tokyo Sonata – This is the one new release that piques my interest – Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa is best known for his horror flicks, but this portrait of a family coming apart at the seams looks to put aside the chills for a more creeping existential terror. It got nothing but great reviews, so I’ll probably give it a watch this week and see how it stacks up.
