Transformers: War For Cybertron

Robots in disguise are the big story this week, as a whole buttload of Transformers games crash-land on just about every platform known to Man. We’ll run down each of them, as well as sling some Energon towards the other games hitting shelves today.

Transformers: War For Cybertron – The big dog in the robot bunch, this A-list title lets you take control of a Cybertronian robot in third-person shooting action. The demo was fantastic, with great, responsive controls and fast-paced action, and the full game looks to be even better. You can fully customize your Autobot or Decepticon warrior from four unique classes, each with special abilities and transformations. Throw in two unique three-player co-op campaigns (one each for Autobots and Decepticons) and you’ll be smashing steel for weeks. Watch the trailer.

Transformers: Cybertron Adventures – It’s on the Wii, so of course it can’t be a war. It has to be an adventure. It’s actually pretty much the same game, although the more robust features of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will probably be sacrificed to work on the Wii’s weaker hardware. The developers have been pretty mum about the game’s content, but have promised different level designs and insight into one of the best of the G1 transformers, Starscream, so maybe Wii owners won’t be totally hosed.

Transformers: War For Cybertron Autobots / Decepticons – DS owners get the War back in the title, but have to shell out for two games to see both sides of the story. Play as 15 characters per side and switch between two in battle at any time, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Multiplayer is available for up to four people in competitive or cooperative modes.

Backbreaker – This physics-based football game caught my interest a few weeks back with its brutal tackles, which abandon the pre-canned animations of the Maddens of the world in favor of procedurally modeled collisions that, like snowflakes, are all unique. Unlike snowflakes, however, they’re epically painful. Watch the trailer.

Naughty Bear – This PS3 and Xbox 360 title takes a dark look at cuddly creatures, as the titular bear must get revenge on the fuzzy inhabitants of Bear Island in this adventure. Push bear faces into electric fences, smash their heads with giant hammers, and abuse them through dozens of other means in order to establish yourself as the boss bear. Watch the trailer.
