Full Release: Movies

A whole pile of movies this weekend, each of them demented in their own way. From Nicolas Cage in a ludicrous wig frantically trying to make enough money to save his pet octopus (that’s real life, not the movie) in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice to Zach Galifinakis as a super-spy in Operation Endgame, this is the week Hollywood forgot to take its meds. Let’s get to the flicks.

Inception – The pick to click of the weekend is Christopher Nolan‘s new drama, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Nolan, an “extractor” – a thief of the human mind who delves into the subconscious of unwitting victims to steal their secrets. However, his latest (and final) job is a little different – he needs to plant a false memory, instead of retrieving one. The previews for this look awesome, the cast is great, and it’s Christopher Nolan. Can’t miss. Watch the trailer.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Disney trots out a live-action spin-off of the famous scene from Fantasia, sort of. Nicolas Cage plays a wizard in modern-day Manhattan who has to defend the city against… another wizard. So he gets Jay Baruchel to be his assistant wizard and teaches him all about wizarding and wizardry. Wow that sounds great! Just kidding, it doesn’t sound great. But Nicolas Cage has absurd hair in it. Watch the trailer.

Operation: Endgame – Hey, America! The safety and security of your nation is in the hands of Zach Galifinakis, Rob Corddry, Bob Odenkirk and many more unlikely actors in this left-field spy comedy. When two teams of assassins face off after the death of their chief in an underground facility, bullets fly. This looks totally bizarre in all the right ways. Watch the trailer.

The Wild Hunt – Is there anything more ludicrous than live-action role-playing? Don’t answer that. This drama may start out like a light clash of cultures as a man joins a LARP group to get closer to his girlfriend, but things quicky take some very dark and very weird turns. Great critical reception has greeted this one everywhere it screened, so could be a nice chaser to a weekend of movie insanity. Watch the trailer.
