Esther Jenner, 89, has been one of the biggest supporters of Bruce Jenner’s transitioning to Caitlyn Jenner. Read on for the details on Esther and her relationship with her new daughter Caitlyn.
1. Esther Was One Of The First Family Members To Speak Publicly About Caitlyn’s Transition
When news of Caitlyn Jenner’s transition started to become public, besides Kim Kardashian saying that “Bruce was on a journey,” Esther was one of the first people to talk openly about the news. Esther was fully supportive and told Caitlyn that she was prouder of her now, more than she had ever been. Esther stated that Caitlyn is happy and that’s all that matters. She said that her first feeling was that she was losing a son, but then she realized she was gaining so much more.
2. At First, Esther Thought It Was All About Money
In the beginning, Esther wondered if Caitlyn’s transition had to do with money, telling Vanity Fair:
I woke up one night and all I was thinking about is: Why is it necessary [for Caitlyn] to go through all these surgeries? Is this all about making money? And that was bothering me. He’s lived a life the last 25 years—and I don’t know if it was both he and Kris or mainly Kris—it seemed like their lifestyle was about money; that’s why it came to my mind.
Now she realizes that this was not the case.
3. Esther Was Caitlyn’s Right-Hand Woman at the 2015 ESPY Awards
Caitlyn Jenner was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPYS and her family was right by her side. Her children and step-children all sat in the audience, dressed in black to support their father, and Caitlyn sat next to her mother Esther who was beaming. Caitlyn revealed that her mother Esther had surgery just a week prior to the show and was almost unable to attend. She also tearfully stated that she believes she got all her courage and determination from her mother. Esther couldn’t stop smiling and waving to Caitlyn from her seat. At Esther’s side were her daughters Pam and Lisa. Have a look at Caitlyn’s speech in the above video.
Caitlyn also thanked Diane Sawyer and her children.
4. Getting Used to Caitlyn Is a Big Adjustment For Her
Though the change takes getting used to, when seeing Caitlyn for the first time on I Am Cait, Esther reveals:
I love Bruce. That’ll never change, but this will take some getting used to.
Esther revealed that it was such an amazing moment and all she wanted to do was give her a hug.
5. Her Son Burt Was Killed In a Car Accident
Esther R. McGuire gave birth to four children with husband William Hugh Jenner, two sons and two daughters – Lisa, Pam, Burt, and Bruce. Both Lisa and Pam have been very supportive of Bruce’s transition into becoming Caitlyn. Burt, however, passed away in a car accident in Canton, Connecticut, in 1976, shortly after Caitlyn’s huge success at the Olympics. Caitlyn Jenner’s son Burt is named after her late brother.
