Seventeen-year-old Modern Family star Ariel Winter has had breast reduction surgery to remedy the neck and back pain inflicted by the weight of her 32F cups. The young star, who plays Alex Dunphy in the mega-hit ABC sitcom, revealed the news to the world in an Instagram post (above). Winter had the surgery in June 2015.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. She Had Her Breasts Reduced to a 34D Size
In an interview with Glamor magazine, Winter said, “It’s amazing to finally feel right.” She added that her breasts have been reduced from a 32F to a 34D. She wrote in her Instagram post, “Never be afraid to speak your mind. Always make decisions because YOU want to, and always do what makes YOU happy.”
2. Her Breast Size Caused Costume Problems on the ‘Modern Family’ Set
Speaking to Glamor, Winter revealed the problems caused by her breast on the set of Modern Family: “They had to hide it on Modern Family a lot. Big sweaters, or strapping it down, which is fine, I understand that it doesn’t fit the character they have in mind. I understand that. But it was difficult to do that every day.”
3. Breast Reduction Surgery Takes Around 4 Hours
The surgery to reduce breasts takes between two and five hours. According to Web MD, surgeons cut around the nipple and downward in the form of a keyhole. Then, doctors remove extra tissue, skin and fat from the breasts while repositioning the nipple. Drainage tubes are then used while the breasts are wrapped in gauze.
Most recipients of the surgery are then required to wear a special bra. The official name for the procedure is a “reduction mammoplasty.” Men who suffer from the condition gynecomastia (where male breasts are enlarged) also qualify for the reduction surgery.
4. Her Estranged Mother Didn’t Know About the Surgery
Winter said that her mother didn’t know about the breast reduction surgery. Her family troubles go back to October 2012, when Winter’s sister, Shanelle Gray, became the actress’ guardian. Then, Winter’s brother, Jimmy Workman, applied to have that guardianship removed and given to him. In May 2014, Gray’s guardianship of her sister was reenforced by the court.
Winter’s mother had been accused of physical and mental abuse by her children. In a statement her mother said that the family had “moved beyond the conflict.” In a Twitter post on May 15, 2015, just prior to her surgery, Winter said that she had been legally emancipated. On August 13, Winter’s Instagram post announcing her surgery thanked her sister and her sister’s husband but made no mention of any other family members.
5. Post-Op Complications Appear in 10 Percent of Breast Reduction Surgery Recipients
Web MD says that the main side effect of breast reduction surgery is scars. Patients are advised not to engage in heavy lifting after the surgery. According to the paper “Analysis of Breast Reduction Complications Derived from the BRAVO Study,” the chances of complications, including hematoma, are increased in younger patients.
