George R. R. Martin isn’t young, and fans have expressed worry about whether he will finish the A Song of Ice and Fire series before he passes away. The prolific author finished the last book in the series in 2011. It’s taken him so long to finish the next book, The Winds of Winter, that HBO’s Game of Thrones series has now passed up the book series. But don’t worry about being spoiled for the books if you watch the show. The show and the book are diverging into a “parallel universe” of sorts.
Here’s what you need to know.
George R. R. Martin Is Not Happy About Fans Who Worry He’ll Pass Away Before Finishing His Books
The author of A Song of Ice and Fire is 67 years old. He was born on September 20, 1948 in New Jersey. Martin first started the series more than 20 years ago, and that’s part of the reason why fans are worried. He doesn’t write quickly.
I find that question pretty offensive, frankly, when people start speculating about my death and my health… So f–k you to those people.”
He added: “Lately I have been slowing down. I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’m getting older—it’s partly that, but I also think it’s partly that the series is so much more successful, that there comes demands that come with the success…”
He’s Told the Showrunners of ‘Game of Thrones’ How He Plans to End the Books
Martin has let the showrunners of Game of Thrones know how he intends the series to end. They needed to know the ending so they could lay the groundwork for it and know where the show was heading. He met with David Benioff and Dan Weiss and discussed every character and how things will end for each one, HitFix reported.
No, he hasn’t written the ending yet. But he knows how it’s going to end and it will be “bittersweet.”
But he doesn’t want anyone else finishing his book series for him, if he doesn’t finish it himself. He’s concerned with the quality and he has complicated feelings about fan fiction. He cited the Gone with the Wind sequel as an example of an “abomination” that he doesn’t want to happen to his books.
