Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks still enjoys a status as one of America’s most popular stars and his paychecks reflect that. Sure, some of his smaller films, like this year’s A Hologram For The King, might not do so well, but he can still get audiences to serious dramas, like recent hits Bridge of Spies and Captain Phillips. His latest film is Inferno, the third film in the Robert Langdon franchise, based on Dan Brown’s novels.
Hanks, who is currently married to singer/actress Rita Wilson, has also made a name for himself as one of the most charitable stars and is known around the world. His work has helped him earn an estimated $350 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Here’s a look at how Hanks has built his fortune and what he does with it.
1. All 3 ‘Toy Story’ Movies Are Among Hanks’ Highest-Grossing Films
In 1995, a small animation studio called Pixar asked Hanks to voice Woody, an old cowboy doll who is jealous of a new space toy. When released in November 1995, Toy Story became an instant success, grossing $191.7 million domestically. Two sequels followed and all three sit in Hanks’ list of highest-grossing films. According to Box Office Mojo, the three films have grossed a combined $1.9 billion worldwide.
Hanks will return to voice Woody in Toy Story 4. For many children, they don’t realize Hanks is Woody until they hear him talk. When on The Graham Norton Show last year, Hanks said he was once on an elevator and a mother told her child that Hanks was Woody. The kid had no idea. Still, the voice is so recognizable that Disney had to bring him back for Toy Story 4.
2. Hanks’ Favorite Causes to Support are Space Exploration & Veterans
One of Hanks’ best-known films is another 1995 film, Ron Howard‘s Apollo 13, in which he plays Jim Lovell. Since that film’s release, Hanks has been a longtime advocate for space exploration. He is on the Board of Governors of the National Space Society and received the NASA Public Service Award in 2000. Hanks also produced the series From The Earth To The Moon with Howard.
“It is the best part of us all—the understanding that given time and money, we can figure out just about anything. The American work ethic is most perfectly displayed in the plans and accomplishments of NASA and its contributing industries. It is, in fact, inspiring to see that we can, and do, put men and women into the lifeless vacuum and glorious free fall of outer space.”
The Saving Private Ryan star has also devoted his time and money to helping veterans. Just last year, Military Times reported that Hanks is leading a Hidden Heroes national campaign to make sure the public knows about how important caregivers are for wounded, ill and injured veterans. Hanks said in 2015:
“They never had any real preparation for the job as caregiver, but they became so in an instant with little warning other than a phone call or email that changed their lives and defined the great challenges that had been thrust upon them.”
3. Hanks Does not Earn Money From Endorsements
One way Hanks doesn’t earn money is by doing endorsements. While many of his colleagues, from Brad Pitt to George Clooney, will star in commercials for brands, Forbes reported in 2014 that Hanks doesn’t.
That’s a shame for advertisers and marketers because, as a 2014 Forbes/E-Poll Research poll showed, Hanks is the top Most Trustworthy Celebrity. Similarly, a Reader’s Digest Poll also found that Hanks was the most trusted person in America. In 2009, AdAge reported that Hanks was second only to President Barack Obama on the Davie Brown Index, an independent index that lists celebrities based on how it is believed they can influence the public to purchase or make decisions.
4. Hanks Owns Three Homes in the Pacific Palisades & 1 in Malibu, Including a $26 Million Home
Hanks has more than enough money to make sure that he and Wilson live like celebrities do while still contributing to charity. According to Redfin, the couple have three homes in the Pacific Palisades area and one more in Malibu. Their biggest home cost them $26 million in 2010. It has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and covers 14,500 square feet.
Last year, the Los Angeles Times reported that Hanks and Wilson were leasing one of their Pacific Palisades homes for $7,5000 a month. This one has three bedrooms. One of the bedrooms is a master suite that has its own fireplace.
5.Hanks’ Films Have Made a Combined $4.4 Billion in the U.S. Alone
Hanks’ films have grossed a combined $4.4 billion in the U.S. alone, reports Box Office Mojo, which is why he doesn’t have to just voice Woody to get roles on the eve of his 60th birthday. The 59-year-old has three more movies in the works for 2016, including the third film in the highly lucrative Robert Langdon series that started with The Da Vinci Code.
Playing Langdon has been great for Hanks. According to Statistic Brain, Hanks reportedly made $18 million for The Da Vinci Code (2006) and $50 million for Angels & Demons (2009). The two films went on to make a combined $1.2 billion worldwide. Inferno opens on October 28.
