Oprah Winfrey returns to television in the new OWN original series, Greenleaf. She stars alongside Merle Dandridge, Lynn Whitfield and Keith David in a show about the Greenleaf family and their sprawling Memphis megachurch, “where scandalous secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful,” the OWN synopsis describes. It continues, “Born of the church, the Greenleaf family love and care for each other, but beneath the surface lies a den of iniquity — greed, adultery, sibling rivalry and conflicting values — that threatens to tear apart the very core of their faith that holds them together.” Winfrey also serves as an executive producer with the show’s creator Craig Wright (Tyrant, Six Feet Under) and Clement Virgo.
Winfrey and Wright discussed the idea of setting a show against the backdrop of a black megachurch because “people who go to church sometimes sin,” the former talk show host told Jimmy Kimmel. “Sin makes for some really nice arcs in storytelling… Sin is great for TV!” Greenleaf will have a two-night series premiere on Tuesday, June 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT and Wednesday, June 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and 10 p.m. ET/PT. The church drama will move to its regular timeslot, Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on June 29. (Photo credit: OWN Oprah Winfrey Network)
