Julie Andrews as Maria

ABC airs The Sound of Music every year during the holiday season and 2016 is no different. The 20th Century Fox film, which has been in the hearts of millions around the world since it was released in March 1965, airs at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, December 18. It won five Oscars at the 1966 Academy Awards ceremony, including Best Picture and Best Director for Robert Wise, who also co-directed West Side Story.

The Sound of Music features some of the most famous songs in the Rodgers & Hammerstein songbook, including the title song, "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Edelweiss" and "My Favorite Things." It also features a stellar cast, toplined by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, two actors who remain active to this day. For example, Andrews is now taking part in Julie's Greenroom, a Jim Henson Company TV show that will air next year. Andrews has an Oscar for her performance in her first movie, 1964's Mary Poppins. In 2010, she voiced Gru's mom in Despicable Me.
