Meet the 2017 ‘Dirty Dancing’ Cast

"Dirty Dancing" Cast 2017

The musical remake of the iconic movie Dirty Dancing airs tonight with an all new cast, with several big names in the mix. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey became legends in the original and iconic film, now making way for a new round of actors to try to fill some pretty big dancing shoes. Much of the movie remains the same, though the movie synopsis has just a couple differences. And, they've added a couple twists in the storyline. For the original film, Google's full movie synopsis reads: Baby (Jennifer Grey) is one listless summer away from the Peace Corps. Hoping to enjoy her youth while it lasts, she's disappointed when her summer plans deposit her at a sleepy resort in the Catskills with her parents. Her luck turns around, however, when the resort's dance instructor, Johnny (Patrick Swayze), enlists Baby as his new partner, and the two fall in love. Baby's father forbids her from seeing Johnny, but she's determined to help him perform the last big dance of the summer. As for the new remake, the 2017 plot description is quite similar and states: Spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances "Baby" Houseman falls in love with the camp's dance instructor, Johnny Castle, which changes many things for everyone in the Houseman family. Like many remakes, this one has already been subject to criticism, with the Los Angeles Times writing that, "Maybe Baby should have stayed in the corner." This mocks the most memorable line from the film. The LA Times wrote: If only it were good enough to take us out of our heads for an evening instead of reminding us why everything was better before, even cheesy dance movies. Whether or not the musical adaptation will be a hit or not, it will be a production that creates nostalgia and brings us back to the original.
