Harris allowed a hit and struck out one without walking a batter in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 5-2 win over the Giants. Harris picked up his second save in May and his third of the year. He's allowed just one run on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings this month. The Athletics' bullpen roles have been fluid for much of the season -- Harris is now one of four relievers with at least three saves, and he's added seven holds. Jack Perkins and Mark Leiter have struggled at times this month, while Joel Kuhnel has seen less high-leverage usage recently. Harris is at a 2.45 ERA on the year, though his 1.64 WHIP and 24:17 K:BB over 22 innings would suggest there will be volatility for him at some point. He walked 33 batters in both of the previous two seasons as well. The southpaw figures to be a matchups-based option for saves as the Athletics' top left-handed reliever.

Hogan Harris: Breaking News
Picks up first save Thursday
Harris earned his first save in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Yankees, striking out one in a hitless and scoreless ninth inning. With a trio of lefties in Cody Bellinger, Jazz Chisholm and Ben Rice due up in the ninth for New York, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay went to lefty Harris for the save chance. He got Bellinger to foul out, Chisholm to fly out and Rice to strike out in a perfect ninth inning. Harris now owns a 3.00 ERA and 8:10 K:BB across eight innings and eight appearances this season.
Could be early favorite for saves
Harris could lead the Athletics' closer committee early in the season, Jason Burke of SI.com reports. Manager Mark Kotsay utilized a committee approach after the A's traded away Mason Miller last season, with Harris leading the way with four of the club's final 15 saves, and the skipper is expected to have a similar strategy this season. As a lefty that can also cover multiple innings, Harris is likely to see significant action outside the ninth inning. The 29-year-old had a 3.20 ERA last season, but his 1.35 WHIP and 23.5 percent strikeout rate don't offer major upside, especially if the save chances are inconsistent.
