Some retailers are open for business on Thanksgiving, to showcase pre-Black Friday sales. For the most part, stores that are opening early for Black Friday sales are unlocking the doors at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
The practice of opening a store on Thanksgiving is pretty controversial. While opening early does give shoppers an extra day to do some holiday shopping, it does force some store employees to leave the Thanksgiving table early to go to work. A Facebook group called “Boycott Shopping on Thanksgiving Day” has over 8,000 Likes, while another group called “Say No To Shopping on Thanksgiving” has over 62,000 Likes. However, stores that do open on Turkey Day are able to make sales while other businesses are closed.
Do note that there may be some exceptions to which major chains open their doors for Thanksgiving. Quartz notes that Rhode Island, Maine, and Massachusetts have laws on the books that forbid retailers from opening on Thanksgiving.
