Ah, the 80s. Over-the-top parties, music, and fashion. Even if you weren’t an adult at the time, 80s nostalgia is for everyone. Who wouldn’t want the chance to relive all those questionable choices? What better time of year than Halloween to indulge in pop culture time travel?
Last Halloween, I attended an 80s-themed party, where costumes ran the gamut from Rainbow Brite to Gordon Gekko. I went with tight black jeans, red handkerchief, and a cutoff bright blue jean jacket complete with Stevie Nicks t-shirt cut-out pinned to the back. The party was light on the illicit powdered drugs and underhanded finance, and that’s really for the best. Some things don’t require revisiting, even for nostalgia’s sake.
If you’re contemplating celebrating the Decade of Excess for this year’s bash, here are five of the best 80s Halloween costumes:
1. Party King 80s Pop Diva
Of course! Peak-pop Madonna-style. Walk into the party like it’s a stage and you are there to own it and be fawned over. This outfit comes with the gold cone cup leotard with removable garters, black leggings, and belt. That means you’ll have to get the wig and headset, as well as the gold heels, separately. Don’t let that stop you. This isn’t a costume for people who like to compromise.
Price: $52.95 – $69.99
2. Forum 80s Soap Star
Speaking of over-the-top, look at this thing. It’s fantastic. If you wear this, you’ll have to practice your dramatic dialogue and mock horror. You might also need a backstory explaining how you’ve died once, but you were really in a coma. Or maybe you’re the twin. At any rate, this comes with the top and the skirt. To complete the look, you’ll need a wig, pantyhose, and patent-leather pumps.
Price: $36.98 (8 percent off MSRP)
3. Forum Men’s 80s Video Superstar
If you need a costume to match the Madonna-inspired one, perhaps if you’re attending a party as a couple, this one features the right mood and color palette. Okay, sure, “U Can’t Touch This” came out in 1990, but it’s the spirit of the thing. This costume screams 80s. This set comes with the gold jacket, brown mesh shirt, and matching pants. That leaves the necklace, sunglasses, microphone, and shoes. If you prefer to tone it down just a touch, there’s also a variant with black pants.
4. Smiffy’s Men’s 80’s Prom King
Somewhat in line with the women’s soap opera star costume, this prom king costume is brightly colored, hilariously dated, and sure to make you want to dance. Pair with a party girl costume, or simply attend as the eligible bachelor (or bachelorette) you are. This runs large, so consider that when making your purchase. And don’t forget the outrageous wig.
Price: $35.40 – $73.33
5. Smiffy’s Women’s Let’s Get Physical
Released in 1981, Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” was an instant hit and went on to become the best-selling single of the decade. Channel some of that success in an even more colorful outfit than Newton-John rocked in the famous video. White pumps would certainly fit with this, as the picture suggests, but the video features Olivia in pink sneakers, so I say grab some pink Keds and go in relative comfort. This costume comes with the leotard, crop top, shorts, and headband, so you’ll want to grab armbands and leggings. And possibly some leg warmers for good measure.
Price: $24.99 – $71.39
