In what was a surprising move 13 months ago, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made the move from the NFL to college football. On top of the move being a surprising one, he was hired at the University of North Carolina. Nobody saw that coming.

A lot of people wonder how things would go for Belichick. In the end, it was a very rough first year in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels went 4-8 and looked confused and not prepared on a lot of weekends.

It led to speculation about Belichick and his future at UNC. There was some thought that there might be a separation between Belichick and the program in-season. That never materialized, and he is expected back for Year 2. He was a guest analyst for Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game between Indiana and Miami. He spoke about his first year with the Tar Heels, and it doesn’t sound like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Bill Belichick Discusses Future at North Carolina on ESPN College GameDay

Belichick joined College GameDay at Hard Rock Stadium before the championship game, before shifting over to the ACC Network’s pregame show. While on the GameDay set, he spoke about his first year at North Carolina and about the future.

“It was great, working with a lot of young players, and I saw a lot of improvement both on and off the field,” said Belichick. “We didn’t really have a recruiting class last year. Lotta new players this year, we’re gonna be in much better shape in terms of having some continuity and building forward through spring ball. I’m excited about that.”

That sounds like someone ready to get back to Chapel Hill and get going on 2026. It was surprising to see Belichick make the jump to the NFL, but there is no doubt that he struggled in Year 1 in college. In an ACC that is arguably the weakest of the four power conferences, it won’t take much for Belichick to get them in the upper tier of the conference sooner rather than later.

Could Bill Belichick Make the Jump to the NFL?

Now that the CFP title game is done, all eyes turn toward 2026. However, some current NFL openings could be interesting to Belichick. The latest one to open was on Monday when the Buffalo Bills fired Sean McDermott. Would Belichick love to go to Buffalo with Josh Allen as his quarterback and stick it to the Patriots after the way things ended in Foxborough a couple of years ago? Sure, he would.

Shortly after McDermott was fired, WFAN host Chris McMonigle linked Belichick to the Bills’ opening on the Craig Carton Show.

“This is the kind of spot I think Bill Belichick makes sense,” McMonigle said. “If he takes the job, he knows Brandon Beane was made president. You don’t have to worry about him having ideas of running the entire show. He would come in just as the head coach, a ready-made team. He has an opportunity to get right back into the Super Bowl talk.”

It could always happen that Belichick returns to the NFL, but on Monday night, he sounded like someone ready for Year 2 at North Carolina.
