The Buffalo Bills appointed Joe Brady as their new head coach on Tuesday, prompting some of the other candidates to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Davis Webb Lands a Promotion

One of the candidates for the Bills’ head coaching position was Davis Webb, the Broncos’ passing game coordinator and quarterback coach.

Webb didn’t have to wait long for a new opportunity after missing out on the Bills’ job, as Denver promoted him as its offensive coordinator, the team announced on Monday.

The Broncos let go of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi last week following their defeat in the AFC title game against the New England Patriots.

It seemed likely the Broncos would promote Webb after firing Lombardi. Many people in the NFL view Webb as an emerging offensive mind. Numerous teams are on the lookout for their next young, innovative, offensive-minded head coach, and Webb may be poised to seize an opportunity soon.

Bo Nix is a Fan of Webb

The good news is that Denver quarterback Bo Nix has a high opinion of Webb, which could signal promising developments for the Broncos in the upcoming season.

“I think Davis is a tremendous coach,” Nix said of Webb on Wednesday, via Denver Broncos.com writer Aric DiLalla. “He understands the role of being a coach. He understands the role of teaching. Webb really knows how to communicate with your players, with me. He’s helped me in two years just consolidate, make things simple, and just keep the main thing the main thing. Taking a lot of information, a lot of knowledge, and been able to just roll right into it. I think highly of him. I know he’s a really good football coach.”

While Webb may not have secured the head coaching position in Buffalo, he indeed emerged as a strong candidate. Webb was with the Bills from 2019 to 2021 as a backup quarterback to Josh Allen.

The focus of this coaching search was on individuals who have previously worked with Allen, and Webb certainly fit that requirement. That’s why Brady became the Bills’ head coach, and former Buffalo offensive coordinator and ex-New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll was in the running. Although Webb wasn’t selected for the head coaching position in Buffalo, he is likely to attract considerable interest from NFL teams in the upcoming season.

Bills Did Steal a Broncos Coach

It wouldn’t hurt for Webb to serve as Sean Payton’s offensive coordinator for a season and learn from one of the NFL’s best offensive-minded head coaches.

Although the Bills didn’t select Webb, they did bring on a key coach from the Broncos.

One of Brady’s initial steps as head coach was to bring on Denver’s defensive passing game coordinator, Jim Leonhard as the defensive coordinator.

Leonhard was a significant factor in the Broncos’ having one of the best defenses this season, and hopefully, he can bring some of that magic to Buffalo.

The Bills’ offense should stay the same this upcoming season. Still, the defense could look significantly different, as former head coach Sean McDermott, who had a defensive mindset, is now out, and a new group has taken over the unit.
