Could the Red Wings land Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck during the offseason with this trade pitch?

The Detroit Red Wings have been trending in the wrong direction at the worst time. Over their last 12 games, the Red Wings have a 4-6-2 record and are now behind the Boston Bruins, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Ottawa Senators in the wild card standings. While the Red Wings trail the Blue Jackets by only one point for the wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, things have certainly not been going well for the Red Wings down the stretch.

While the Red Wings still have a real shot of making the playoffs, it is clear that they should be looking to improve their roster during the offseason. Their biggest need has been another top-six center for a long time, and they did not address it ahead of the 2026 NHL trade deadline. However, the summer will give them another opportunity to try to do so.

When looking at trade candidates heading into the 2026 NHL offseason, there is no question that New York Rangers star center Vincent Trocheck stands out. While the Rangers did not move Trocheck ahead of the deadline, they are expected to listen to offers for him again during the summer as they continue their retool. When noting that he was linked to the Red Wings leading up to the deadline, it would not be shocking in the slightest if they targeted him this summer.

Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have an offseason trade pitch that would have the Red Wings acquire Trocheck from the Rangers.

Red Wings Get:

  • Vincent Trocheck

Rangers Get:

  • 2027 First-Round Pick
  • 2028 Second-Round Pick
  • Eddie Genborg
  • Michael Rasmussen

Red Wings Were Among Teams That Targeted Trocheck Ahead of Trade Deadline

With the Red Wings in desperate need of a legitimate second-line center, they were one of the main teams that were linked to Trocheck ahead of the 2026 NHL trade deadline.

Leading up to the trade deadline, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Red Wings were one of the teams that targeted Trocheck.

“Detroit was also involved in conversations about Vincent Trocheck, as is Carolina. (There are always teams I don’t see coming,)” Friedman wrote in his Trade Deadline Thoughts column for Sportsnet.

When noting that the Red Wings targeted Trocheck ahead of the deadline, it would not be shocking in the slightest if they did again this summer. Their need for an upgrade at the second-line center spot is abundantly clear, and Trocheck would provide them with just that.

Trocheck Would Be a Perfect Fit on the Red Wings

When looking at the Red Wings’ current roster, there is no question that Trocheck would be a great fit. This is because he would not only give them an upgrade at their 2C spot but would also work on both their power play and their penalty kill.

Furthermore, he would be more than a rental for the Red Wings, as he will only be in year five of his seven-year, $39.375 million contract next season. Therefore, he would be a nice long-term part of Detroit’s roster if brought in.
