TV lovers rejoice! There is now a way to watch your favorite shows on Hulu without watching the same commercial five times. As one would expect, the new service will cost a little more each month but it might be worth it to never hear Jennifer Garner say “What’s in your wallet?” again.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. The Commercial-Free Hulu Will Cost an Extra Few Dollars
Normal Hulu Plus users watch about 10-15 commercials during an hour-long show. Though that is significantly less than typical cable, the site often airs the same few commercials every time, which can get old. To get rid of commercials for good, you’ll pay an extra $4/month, which brings the user to $12/month.
2. iOS Users Will Pay More
Because of iTunes charges, if you are looking to upgrade on an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV you can expect to pay and extra $2 for charges, which will come out to $14 a month. Hulu explained exactly why that is online.
3. Not All Shows Can be Commercial Free
Popular shows including, Once Upon a Time, Grimm, New Girl, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and anything by Shonda Rhimes won’t be supported by the Commercial Free option. The company explained that it just couldn’t get the licensing to stream these without commercials. The solution is to have short commercial breaks before and after the show so it isn’t interrupted.
4. Hulu Announced The Change is Based on Feedback
In the announcement, Hulu said the idea came from user feedback. People were angry they were paying monthly and still sitting through the same commercials.
5. Hulu Has Significantly Less Subscribers Than Netflix
Though user feedback probably did come into play, it is more likely Hulu finally realized it has to do something to compete with Netflix. The streaming website costs less and has over 65 million subscribers to Hulu’s 9 million. It will be interesting to see if this change spikes those numbers.
