Are you seeing a message online that your iPhone 7 hasn’t shipped yet, but you’re really hoping it will arrive by launch date on September 16? Avid Apple fans have figured out a way to track where your phone is, even in some cases if the phone is still labeled online as not having shipped yet. This is how to track the iPhone 7 using a UPS reference number.

Here’s what you need to know.

If you ordered your phone through Apple and are seeing that your phone hasn’t shipped yet, that’s not necessarily accurate. In many cases, you can still track your phone’s current location. According to Redditor AmishAvenger, you may be able to track your iPhone on UPS without the tracking number. Go to this UPS link and use your phone number as the “reference number.” (Make sure, if you’re on mobile, that you’re using the desktop version of the site.) If your phone number doesn’t work, try using the serial number as the reference number instead. You can find the serial number on Apple at this link. (New iPhone orders aren’t showing up here for everyone, but if yours does, then you can use the serial number to track your shipment.)

This method doesn’t work 100 percent of the time. For example, if your order really is still processing and hasn’t shipped, the method won’t work.

If you ordered through a carrier rather than through Apple, this method won’t always work. T-Mobile, for example, isn’t using phone numbers as reference numbers this year, one customer shared.

The method has worked for some people who ordered through Verizon. Others said that for Verizon, the reference number is locationcode_orderid.

You’ll definitely want to check your delivery date, because some people who were told their phone wasn’t going to arrive until Sept. 23 are discovering that their delivery date has been moved up to Sept. 16.
