Pee-Wee Unites With Judd For New Adventure

Pee Wee Herman's New Judd Apatow Movie

It’s been 24 years since the iconic kid’s show Pee-Wee’s Playhouse originally aired, and now it looks like the world will be getting a fresh dose of the red bowtied funny man.

Daily Variety reports that actor Paul Ruebens will be teaming up with comedy producer superstar, Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Get Him to the Greek… and just about every successful comedy of the last 5 years) to develop an untitled Pee-wee Herman feature for the big screen. The pairing came about after Apatow watched Rubens in his  sold-out one man show “Pee Wee Herman Show” at the Los Angeles Nokia theater.

“Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-Wee Herman,” Apatow told Daily Variety. “I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens — who is an extraordinary and ground-breaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.”

Ruebens seems to be equally excited about working with Judd and returning Pee-wee to the cineplex.

“There is no one like Judd in our business – he loves comedy with emotion and heart, and he sees what we do as art,” Reubens said. “I can’t believe I’m getting this opportunity to be working with him.”

Judd won’t be steering the ship from the director’s chair, but will act as producer on the project, which will be co-written by Ruebens and thespian-turned-scribe Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper and Inglorious Bastards). The funny guys are remaining pretty tight lipped about what we can expect, but it’s looking to be a “giant adventure.”

Pee-Wee’s first adventure to the big screen was 1985s  Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure from Tim Burton.

While this is certainly big news, the wave to renewed comedy relevance has been starting to build for Pee-Wee over the last year. After a couple of successful appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and sold out screening of his 1985 flick and Q&A with fans  during Los Angeles Film Fest, his one man show will do a 10-week run on Broadway starting in October at the Stephen Sondheim Theater.

We’ve been waiting for you, Pee-Wee. Good to have you back.
