Amanda Dempsey, the mother of actor Patrick Dempsey, has died at the age of 79, reports WCSH. The Grey’s Anatomy star’s mother was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1997.

1. The Center For Cancer Hope & Healing Was Set Up in Her Honor
In 2007, after Amanda Dempsey had been fighting cancer for ten years, her son, Patrick, set up the Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine. The CEO of Central Maine Healthcare Peter Chalke said about her:
The entire Central Maine Medical family mourns the passing of Amanda Dempsey. Amanda Dempsey was both a great lady and a determined fighter who displayed tremendous courage, class and grace during her long battle with cancer. We will miss Amanda deeply, but we were all blessed by knowing her and being inspired by her life story.
The Dempsey Center provides free cancer support and education to all sufferers.
2. Amanda Dempsey Suffered Multiple Relapses
Her cancer relapsed five times over the past 15 years. Dempsey Center Executive Director Wendy Tardif said upon her death, “Amanda’s passing has only made us more resolute in our mission, and we will continue to expand and grow our services and share her legacy with the world.”
3. She Worked as the Secretary in Dempsey’s High School
Her maiden name was Caisson. During Patrick Dempsey’s high school years, his mother was the school’s secretary.
4. Amanda Dempsey Was a Constant Presence at Her Son’s Charitable Efforts
The “Dempsey Challenge” was also set up as part of the charitable efforts, in which Amanda Dempsey was regular competitor.
5. Amanda Dempsey is Survived by Her 3 Children
She is survived by her children Patrick, Mary and Alicia. according to The Dempsey Center.
